Sons

Continuing the legacy

The Sons of the American Legion (S.A.L.) was founded in 1932 as a service organization for sons of Legionnaires to participate in programs which support and promote the American Legion’s mission, such as veterans help programs and public outreach. It is a program within the American Legion, so many members of the legion are also S.A.L. members. All members belong to a squadron, the local level of organization that pairs with a American Legion post. Although a squadrons charter relying on that posts charter, squadrons do have flexibility in what programs and activities they wish to organize while fulfilling the Sons mission to strengthen the four pillars of the American Legion. Some long term projects include the S.A.L. raising $5.8 million of the American Legion Child Welfare Foundation since 1988, and S.A.L. having volunteered over half a million hours at veterinary hospitals, and raising over a million dollars for VA hospitals and homes. The S.A.L. is also in support of the Citizens Flag Alliance, a group which aims to protect the U.S. flag from desecration.
